Highway and Bridge projects with which SGS has been involved

SGS Personnel have been, and continue to be deeply involved in the US 93 expansion project. This is a billion dollar project to expand the US 93 portion of the official CANAMEX Corridor for North American Free Trade.

SGS is performing on these sub-projects:

Arizona SR 366

Geotechnical exploration, engineering, and other design services for resloping and rock fall mitigation along SR 366 in Graham County, AZ.

SGS's initial responsibilty was to explore rock cuts above the highway that would be involved in rock fall mitigation.

To accomplish this, during 1998 - 2000, SGS performed geotechnical mapping, photographic documentation of rock conditions, core drilling and logging, fracture measurements, rock strength testing, and various other analyses related to rock excavation methods and slope kinematic stability.

During 2001, SGS received a scope of work modification to include exploration for retaining walls and roadway realignments to afford greater separation between cut slope and travel lanes.

Presently, SGS personnel are still providing technical assistance with this project.

Project Description

US 60

Reconstruction of US 60 at Hagen Hill in Gila County, AZ. This project involved intricate and extensive excavation of tall, narrow cuts in basalt. SGS was responsible for all rock slope exploration, field geology, and rock excavation matters on this project.

Project Description

Arizona SR 87

Construction of Segment E on Arizona SR 87 between Mesa and Payson. This project was a direct result of SGS personnel involved in the design and construction of Segments A through D of that highway. SGS performed blasting consulting and geological engineering services during the construction of this segment.

US 191

Probabilistic slope design calculations for proposed relocation of US-191 through Phelps Dodge's new Coronado Pit, part of the large Morenci Mine complex near Clifton, AZ.

US 89A

Geological engineering for rock excavation and slope treatment of US 89A between Sedona and Dry Creek. This entails close coordination with the Coconino National Forest to meet stringent aesthetic criteria without sacrificing constructibility or slope stability.

I-10

Drilled shaft exploration and design for 5 new I-10 bridges and retaining walls near Tucson, AZ.
